Okay, I am very new to Biztalk 2004. I just installed BT2004 and am trying to use the Business Rules Composer. However, when I open it up it asks me for a rule store to open. I point it to my local (SQL Express 2005 database) and I get this error message, \”Cannot connect to the rule store. Database \”BizTalkRulesDB\” on server \”IT06-3000\” is not configured as a rule engine database. I’ve searched high and low on how to \”configure\” a rule engine database but I cannot find any guides anywhere. Can anyone help me? How can I do this? Can I do it thru SQL Server Manager? Do I have to do it thru BizTalk?
I’ve even tried to run the configframework.exe but whenever I try to set up a database there I get a \”The database <name here> on server <server here> is not compatible with the current version of BizTalk. Please specify a different database name or select a different server.\” Technically, I think I don’t need to set up BizTalk manament DB because all I really want to do is play around with the Business Rules Composer. We really don’t need BizTalk at all here because we just need to generate/export a rule xml file for our application. I just need to get the thing up and running. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

Also, I’ve not only used SQL Express 2005 but I’ve also tried connecting to a remote SQL 2000 server database and I get the exact same errors. Help!

      You have two problems here.
Firstly Biztalk 2004 is not supported on SQL 2005, only SQL 2000.
Secondly, I don’t believe you can install the BRE in standalone mode with Biztalk 2004. You must install Biztalk as well.

You might like to try Biztalk 2006 beta 2, this will use SQL 2005, but you will probably need the Standard Edition as a minimum.
I think with 2006 you can also install the BRE standalone.
