      I am setting up two different testing environments with two separate Physical Biztalk servers that need to be configured to use the the same SQL 2005 Instance.  I have used different naming conventions on all of the biztalk databases, example: placing a Z2 infront of each database name.  I have been successful on all of the steps except with the Biztalk Runtime, It consistently fails to configure.  When I look at the logs it makes reference to the first Biztalk installation with the default database names.  Any info would be highly appreciated.  We are doing this for our QNXT 3.4 pre implementation evaluation and testing process.

      I had to get an answer to this sooner than later, so called MS.  They said no dice

      Thank you

      I’m not sure why you need to run the two BizTalk groups from the same instance of SQL Server, however if its a hardware cost issue, have you considered running a second instance of SQL Server 2005 on the same hardware?

      Also, I was under the impression that two BizTalk groups could exist on the same SQL instance so long as they used different database names. Can you elaborate on what MS actually said about why the configuration would not work.

      Cheers, Nick.

        This is what microsoft told me.  The reason that I wanted to run two Biztalk installs off of one instance was to save the overhead on the server of creating another instance, Also with 2002 biztalk we run all of out test installs off of the same instance, 3 separate installs, each with identifing names. I got close to getting it to work, all except the Biztalk Runtime, I could not get more than one to run on the same SQL instance

        PROBLEM

        ========

        Installation of Multiple Biztalk Message Boxes against the Same SQL Instance fails.

        RESOLUTION

        ============

        This is not a Supported installation. Each Biztalk Installation has to be against its own SQL Instance.

        Thanks for your time and Patience in this matter.

          I find this interesting as I currently have this configuration working with a some test boxes with BizTalk Server 2006 (R1).  So I am not sure if Microsoft has prevented people from doing this in R2 or not??

          Here is how I have a configuration

          Server A, Server B Server C                                                             ServerD

                           |                                                                                         |

                           |                                                                                         |

                                                                 (Databases for Server A,B,C: BizTalkMgmtDb, BizTalkDTADb, BizTalkMsgBox…etc)

                                                                 (Databases for Server D: upg_BizTalkMgmtDb, upg_BizTalkDTADb, upg_BizTalkMsgBoxDb…etc)

            Kent,

            That would be my take on the configuration – I know this was acceptable in BizTalk 2004 and 2006 (I have a client who is running in both of those configurations). Maybe it is an R2 ‘feature’?

            Bdivine – I would suggest that if you have the time, go ahead and install that second instance of SQL Server 2005 on your SQL box and run with that configuration.

            Cheers, Nick.
