BizTalk Server 2020 – 20 days, 20 posts – day 8. Microsoft announced a few months ago, the release of Microsoft BizTalk Server 2020 – the 11th major release of BizTalk Server –and, as usual with previous versions, I updated my installation and configuration manual for BizTalk Server 2020. This whitepaper will explain in detail – a step-by-step guideline – how to install and configure Microsoft BizTalk Server 2020 on a standalone environment running Windows Server 2019. This information will help you plan the installation and configuration of BizTalk Server 2020, applications and components on which it depends focused on creating a development environment (you can also follow this tutorial to help you create production environments, however, if this is the case you need to skip some steps).
Assumptions and out of scope
We will be assuming that the operating system: Windows Server 2019 and the latest critical Windows updates from Microsoft already have been installed.
In this scenario, we will be performing a full installation of Microsoft BizTalk Server 2020. The following components will be installed:
- Enterprise Single Sign-On (SSO).
- BizTalk Group.
- BizTalk Runtime.
- Business Rule Engine.
- BAM Tools and Alerts.
- BAM Portal.
- BAM Portal it is deprecated, but we still can use it.
- BizTalk EDI/AS2 Runtime.
- REST APIs (Management data APIs)
- Management data APIs are endpoints that let you remotely update, add, and query the status of different artifacts in your BizTalk Server environment. The endpoints are added using REST and come with a swagger definition.
- BizTalk TMS.
- BizTalk TMS is a service that refreshes authentication tokens used by BizTalk. It is a prerequisite for the Office 365 adapters.
- Microsoft BizTalk Adapters for Enterprise Applications.
What’s in store for you?
This whitepaper will give you a detailed understanding of the following:
- Preparing the Prerequisites and Installation for BizTalk Server 2020
- Installing and Configuring BizTalk Server 2020
- BizTalk Server 2020 Environment Optimization

And you thought there was no Santa Claus? I couldn’t
take this opportunity and this time of year to once again give back to the
community what they have also done for me: grow up together in several aspects.
So, this year with the fantastic help as always of BizTalk360 team, my partner in many adventures during these years and the sponsor of my blog, we end up writing, revising and editing in a short period (5 days) another BizTalk Server whitepaper to be completed before Christmas: BizTalk Server 2016: End-to-end scenario – Receiving Messages through the HTTP Adapter whitepaper.
The role of an adapter is to enable communications
between BizTalk Server and external systems and trading partners. Users
configure adapters by creating send ports and receive locations that define the
properties for given instances of the adapter. Most adapters support both send
and receive operations, whereas other adapters support communication in only
one direction.
The HTTP Adapter is one of the adapters that support
two-way communications, but unlike other adapters, this adapter has two
characteristics that define it:
- The HTTP
“Receive” Adapter that is responsible for delivering messages to BizTalk is, in
fact, a DLL that runs inside Internet Information Services (IIS)
- And for that
reason, it must be configured in IIS – it is not there out-of-the-box.
In this whitepaper, we will describe the step-by-step process of installing and configuring the HTTP Adapter in order to receive messages.
Some of you may think that the HTTP adapter is deprecated,
but that is not true. The only adapters that were deprecated were the old SAP
adapter (removed) and the SOAP and SQL adapter (that still are present in the
Administration Console). The HTTP adapter is a classic but is not deprecated
and is still very used today.
The idea for
this whitepaper was partly out of a real need and at a customer request.
Because it is a strange adapter with a peculiar configuration unlike any other
adapter in BizTalk Server, when I was giving a training course, the attendees
struggle to understand and put it working correctly. By coincidence, a week
later, I needed to put this adapter working at another client. As a result of that request and that client’s
need, I end up creating this step-by-step guide on how to install and configure
the HTTP adapter to receive messages through HTTP requests. I think this is a
good whitepaper about a classic adapter in BizTalk Server.
I hope you like
it and marry Christmas!

My latest BizTalk Server whitepaper has been published: “BizTalk Server 2016: step by step Logic App adapter installation guide” and I’m thrilled!
I am currently doing many hybrid integrations, leveraging the capabilities of BizTalk Server and Logic Apps to meet the needs/requirements of my clients/projects. Some of these projects began initially to be completely on-premises, but as the projects grew and new needs emerged, the need to use some cloud services appeared like Power BI, Office365 (Teams, Outlook) and so on, became a reality. And these features are much easier to implement and have more productivity on Azure Logic Apps instead of BizTalk Server as there are already native connectors there.
And you have known that in reality there are several ways to implement this two bidirectionality communication between Logic App and BizTalk Server :
- Sending messages from BizTalk Server to Azure Logic Apps
- and receiving messages from Azure Logic Apps to BizTalk Server
like using HTTP requests or Azure Service Bus, and by doing so you can create robust and smart hybrid integrations. You may have to use one of these alternative implementations if you are using older versions of BizTalk Server.
The good news is that BizTalk Server 2016 has a better and more user-friendly way to make these hybrid connections. Instead of using HTTP requests, with BizTalk Server 2016 you can use the Logic Apps adapter to receive messages from an Azure Logic App or send messages to an Azure Logic App.
This whitepaper will give you a detailed understanding of the following:
- Requirements to install Logic App adapter
- Microsoft BizTalk Server Adapter for Logic Apps
- On-premises data gateway
- How to install and configure the Logic App Adapter
Where I can download it
The whitepaper is completely free and you can download it here:
I would like to take this opportunity also to once again say thanks to Lex Hegt for helping me reviewing this whitepaper especially for the incredible work of him correcting my horrible English and in this way make the document and my thoughts being readable.

There is something special when you find a solution or possible solution to an annoying error message (for not using another type of language) and this is one of these cases: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package!
This error occurred each time my team was trying to install a BizTalk Application on a non-developer environment: Test or QA. And the full error description was:
There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

And “Contact your support personnel or package vendor”? What a ****, It is me! I am the support personnel and package vendor/creator… you still write these kinds of error messages?
Cause
Unfortunately, this error may be caused by several reasons, but some places may tell you that this problem can be related to:
- The package is actually corrupted, you should export again and import it – not really like to a happen or solve it
- The fact of the destination location does not exist – that is not true, because the installation will create the directories;
- Invalid drive letter – again it is not true because the MSI will not go further on the wizard if that happens
To correctly diagnose the problem and find the cause of the problem you should consult the Event Viewer of the BizTalk Server in which you are trying to install the MSI. Normally you will find more details about the cause of the error.
The most common will be:
- The Installation Path that you are providing in the wizard along with the name of the assemblies will have more than 256 characters.
By default, the installation folder will be:
- C:Program Files (x86)Generated by BizTalkname of the BizTalk Application
That is:
- 46 characters for the default folder “C:Program Files (x86)Generated by BizTalk”
- Adding, more or less, 15 characters for the BizTalk Application name folder
Will give you a total of 195 characters to be used in the assembly’s names. Which normally is enough.
Solution
Once again, in this case, the solution is very simple:
- ·Change the installation folder to a small path like:
By providing a small path, my team was able to successfully install the MSI.

A funny error I found out on December 4, 2017, that I’m now recovering from my backlog to be published. While trying to repair a BizTalk Server 2016 installation on a virtual machine I got this annoying, funny and strange error: Please insert the disk: 1.
Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016 Installation Wizard
Please insert the disk: 1

and regardless of what I did back then, like running the execution file as an administrator, I was getting this error every time I was trying to repair the BizTalk Server installation.
And what I did back then was:
- Attach the BizTalk Server ISO file in the DVD drive of Virtual Machine that was running in the Hyper-V;
- And execute the installation file from the DVD drive of the VM;
Cause
Unfortunately, this message may appear if you are trying to repair the product from the CD/DVD drive and the reason is not clear for me.
I don’t know if this error occurred by the fact that in the original installation the ISO that was locally on the machine or it is just a coincidence.
Solution
The solution, however, is very simple:
- Copy content of the BizTalk Server 2016 ISO to the local hard drive of the Virtual Machine – but I believe that this can be the same to other BizTalk Server versions;
- And execute from the local Hard Drive the BizTalk Server setup file has an Administrator;
By doing that you will definitely solve the “Please insert the disk: 1” issue and you will be able to repair the existing installation.

Yesterday, June 25, 2016, BizTalk Server team released the new BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Pack 3, again, this only can be applied to BizTalk Server 2016, the previous versions of the product don’t support FP and there is nothing on the roadmap to support them. This FP was announced in Integrate 2018 London event and it will include:
- 3 brand new Office365 adapters:
- Office 365 Mail Adapter: will allow you to consume (read, mark as read or delete) Outlook e-mail messages through one-way BizTalk Server receive locations or send email messages through one-way static or dynamic send ports.
- Office 365 Calendar Adapter: that will allow you to get future calendar events through one-way BizTalk Server receive locations or create calendar events through one-way static or dynamic send ports. Personally, I still need to find a good case story for this adapter but is better have than don’t have nothing.
- Office 365 Contact Adapter: that will allow you to create contacts through one-way static or dynamic send ports. Again, still need to find a good case story for this adapter.
- Support for Authentication with Azure AD and OAuth using Microsoft Enterprise Single Sign-On – This feature is included, but only consumed by the new Office 365 adapters
- And compliance with:
- US government accessibility standard
- FIPS and GDPR privacy standards
- Compatibility with SQL Server 2016 SP2: You now can deploy multiple databases per instance of an Availability Group.
And I couldn’t wait for trying it out!
Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Pack 3: Step-by-step Installation Instructions
After you download the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Pack 3 You should:
- Run the downloaded .EXE file – BTS2016-KB4103503-ENU.exe – from your hard drive.
- In the “Welcome to Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Update 3 Installation Wizard” screen, click “Next”

- In the “License agreement” screen, select the option “I accept the terms of this license agreement” and then click “Next”

- In the “Ready to Install”, it will be provided a list of products that will be enhanced, you should click “Next” to continue with the installation.

- The BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Pack 3 installation will prompt a window with the list of services that will be restarted during the installation process, click “Yes” to continue with the installation.

- The installation process may take some minutes to complete, and you probably see some “background” windows to appear and to be completed.
- Important: you should wait until the “Installation Wizard has completed” screen to appear
- In the “Installation Wizard has completed” screen, click “Finish”

Note: BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Pack 3 doesn’t request for you to restart BizTalk Server machine after you finish the FP3 installation process. But I normally like to restart once the installation is complete (this is optional).
Once the installation is complete, you will be able to see and use the new features:

Note: Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Update 3 comes with CU5, so once you install this FP you are also updating your BizTalk Server environment with the latest cumulative update. This is not optional.

This week while configuring and optimizing a brand-new BizTalk Server 2016 environment we got the following error message while trying to configure register the WCF-SQL Adapter in the BizTalk Server Administration console:
Creation of Adapter WCF-SQL Configuration Store entries failed. Access denied. See the event log (on computer ‘SQL-SERVER’) for more details.

(sorry the picture quality, it was taken with my cell phone)
Despite I was a member of BizTalk Administration group, I didn’t have remote access to the SQL Server machine that was managed by another team so I couldn’t go there to check it out. Nevertheless, I reach that team (SQL and sysadmins) already with a possible solution that it turned out to be correct.
Cause
Many of the times these types of issues indicate or lead us to believe that there are problems associated with MSDTC. Or is not properly configured, Windows Firewall may be blocking DTC communications or in HA environment’s SSO is not clustered and may be offline.
All these possibilities should be investigated. However, if any of the points mentioned above were, for this particular case, a probable cause for this problem, it should have already manifested itself when the team pre-installed the environment and they did install the environment without encountering any problems.
The only difference between the installation and now my configuration was that these tasks were made by different users!
It is important to mention that, the user that is trying to registering an Adapter using the BizTalk Server Administration Console, need to have permissions to the SSO Database in order to register its properties so that he can store and retrieve the properties at design time and runtime.
And that is one of the reasons for why the “BizTalk Server Administrators” group should be a member of the “SSO Administrators” group.
BizTalk administrations are responsible for configuring all the components of BizTalk and many of them need to interact with SSO Database.
The people/team that was responsible to install BizTalk Server, they were members of BizTalk Server Administration, SSO Administration and some of them System Administrations and that was the reason why they didn’t get this problem or similar problems. The reason for the problem I faced was because:
- My user was a member of BizTalk Server Administrators and local admin only. But the BizTalk Server Administrators wasn’t member of SSO Administration group.
Solution
To solve this problem, you may have two options:
- Add my user to the SSO Administrators group.
- Not recommended because in my opinion is more difficult to manage user access rights if you add them to each individual group.
- Or add the “BizTalk Server Administrators” as a member of the “SSO Administrators” group.
After my user or the “BizTalk Server Administrators” group was added as a member of the “SSO Administrators” group, I was able to register the adapter.
Note: this problem can happen with any adapter you are trying to register.

“Cannot proceed with installation. Biztalk server pack is installed.”, it is not the first time that I encounter this problem, the first time was while I was trying to install Cumulative Update 2 for BizTalk Server 2016 ( the error that you can see in the picture below) and more recently while I was trying to install Cumulative Update 3:
Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016 CU2 [KB 4021095]
Cannot proceed with installation. Biztalk server pack is installed. Please install Cumulative Update for BizTalk Server Feature Pack.

Cause
There is this new “kid on the block” that was introduced by the BizTalk Server Product group in BizTalk Server 2016 that is call “BizTalk Server 2016 Feature Pack”.
Microsoft will use feature pack approach as a way to provide new and non-breaking functionalities to the product at a faster pace without the need for you to wait 2 years for the next major release of the product to have new features.
However, until know – Cumulative Update 3 for BizTalk Server 2016 – the Cumulative Updates are not aligned with the feature pack. And when I say: “Cumulative Updates are not aligned with the feature pack” I mean that when Microsoft releases a new BizTalk Server Cumulative Update:
- it will not be compatible with Feature Pack 1
- you can only install it on environments without BizTalk Server Feature Pack 1 installed, otherwise you will receive the error described above.
- you need to wait a few more days/weeks for Microsoft release a new update of BizTalk Server Feature Pack 1 with the Cumulative Update included
At least based on the history until now:
I do not know if this behavior will change in future versions of Cumulative Updates, I hope it does and all the new CU’s will be compatible with FP1.
Important Note: as an additional note, currently if you want to install FP1 you will be forced to install Cumulative Update 3 for BizTalk Server 2016 because it is now part of the Feature Pack… so you cannot install FP1 without it.
Solution
Of course, currently, this is a false issue because Microsoft already released an updated version of Feature Pack 1 with the latest CU. But if this behavior continues to occur in future CU’s versions, you have two options:
- Abdicate the Feature Pack by uninstalling it. And then you will be able to update your BizTalk Server environment with the latest fixes.
- Be patient, and wait a few days/weeks until Microsoft release an updated version of the Feature Pack compatible with the latest CU.

One of the first steps, while you are trying to configure BizTalk Server, is to provide the “Database server name” on the BizTalk Server <version> Configuration page. So far nothing new. However, in one of my recent BizTalk Server installations where we were using a SQL Server that was configured with a non-default port (1433), we encountered this bizarre problem:
BTS2016LAB01, 3431 is invalid because it contains one or more of the following characters: `~!@#$^*()+=[]{}|;’”<>?.

Cause
Well, the reason is obvious for all but in this case, a little stupid considering the current days. Of course, we all can understand that the special characters are not allowed and we cannot use it.
But was not our case, we are not using any special characters in the Database server name and if you check carefully, we catch the error while configuring the Group, which means that we already were able to create the SSO database in the SQL Server – so the database name was valid/correct.
And if there were really special characters in the Database server name, then the configuration wizard should be smart to validate on the BizTalk Server <version> Configuration page and do not to continue with the configuration.
I personally consider this as a bug in the BizTalk Server Configuration Wizard tool because in our case the real problem and the cause of this error was that we had provided the database name with a space between the server and the port: “BTS2016LAB01, 3431”
Solution
The solution to this problem is simple, first of all, and obviously, you cannot use any of the following special characters: `~!@#$^*()+=[]{}|;’”<>?. under the Database Server Name.
In our case, the solution was simple also, we just need to remove the empty space on the Database Server Name: “BTS2016LAB01,3431”
