Microsoft SOA & BPM Conference

I’ve just arrived in Seattle for the Microsoft SOA & BPM conference that kicks off on Tuesday 30th October in Seattle, I’m presenting a best-practice session on Wednesday afternoon titled “How everyone should test their BizTalk Server based solutions”, it’s a great deck with some compelling demos that went down very well at a internal technical conference earlier this year.   If we can get BizTalk solutions tested properly – the world will be a much better place!

More as the week goes on, should be some interesting presentations……. In the meantime Sam Gentile has a great running commentary of the week.

WCF Adapters in BizTalk Server 2006 R2 Whitepaper

The whitepaper I wrote on the new WCF adapters in BizTalk Server 2006 R2 is now available on MSDN. Abstract:

Microsoft® BizTalk® Server has long supported Web services as a primary communication technique but the support has been fairly limited to date. For example, developers working with BizTalk Server 2006 can use the built-in SOAP adapter to achieve “basic profile” service integration or the downloadable Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 2.0 adapter when support for the various WS-Security specifications is required. But that’s as far as these existing adapters can take you in today’s maturing service-oriented landscape. Developers working in more modern service-oriented environments, which build on the various WS-* protocols, have been unable to fully utilize BizTalk Server 2006 in such environments since the product lacked support for Windows® Communication Foundation (WCF) within the messaging layer.

Fortunately, with the release of BizTalk Server 2006 R2, developers will find a set of new WCF adapters that offer full integration with the advanced WS-* specifications supported by the WCF runtime. These adapters target the most common WCF communication scenarios and make them easy to tackle. As with the earlier SOAP/WSE adapters, developers can use the tools provided with the WCF adapters to publish WCF services from orchestrations or schemas and to consume external services using a variety of different transport, encoding, and protocol options, offering unparalleled service-oriented flexibility. This whitepaper provides in-depth coverage on using the new WCF adapters.

Many thanks to Sarathy Sakshi, Jon Flanders, and Matt Milner for their valuable feedback.

We interrupt the regularly scheduled blog posting for a quick personal note. On Friday night (10/26) at 8:27pm, Noah Donnelly Seroter was born to two very happy parents. You’ll probably see more 2AM blog posts from me in the near future.

SOA & Business Process Conference

I’m currently in Bellevue, near Redmond and the SOA & Business Process Conference kicks off today with a meet up at Parlor Billiards in the evening.

A few of us decided to meet up in Manzana’s for a meal Sunday Night, Jon Flanders made a brief appearance, Sam Gentile, Tim Rayburn and Saravana Kumar stayed around for food, and we were joined by the guys from KnowIT.

This will be my first time presenting, I’ll be talking about “Reliable Messaging on the Microsoft Connected Systems Platform” on Thursday afternoon. There are a lot of great presentations to look out for this year:

Steve Swartz and Clemens Vasters will be talking about the evolution of the SOA platform, Darren Jefford will be telling us how we should be testing our BizTalk applications, Jon Flanders has a session on BAM and WCF, Matt Meleski on error handling in BizTalk, Dwight Goins on mobile WCF services, John Callaway on SOA anti-patters and Stephen W. Thomas on advanced orchestrations are a few that I have on my list.

The schedule will be hectic, Marjan has been busy organizing another MVP and Influential’s dinner, and I have a few engagement meetings with various people from the BizTalk team, I’ll also be spending time with the QuickLearn guys working on the new DeepDive course, and helping out on the QuickLearn stand in the exhibitors booth.

If you are at the conference, drop round to the Ask the Experts session Tuesday evening and say “Hi!. I’ll be answering questions on BizTalk team development. If not, keep your eyes open for the next one around the same time next year. If you are focused on BizTalk, WF, WCF and related stuff this is the place to be.

I’m at the Microsoft SOA & Business

Process Conference this week, and presenting on Friday on BizTalk 2006 R2 and

HIPAA Transactions. Starting bright and early on Monday morning, I’ll be Twittering my

progress through the day, any big announcements and any little observations.

I will of course have more than one blog post from this week as well, but if you want

your “live and up to date” information, then now is the time to start following
