BizTalk is very nice Integration tool with rich amount of Adapters. There are other features like: Business Process, BAM, BRE etc. You can read this post to know why to use BizTalk server: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee264897(BTS.10).aspx
Open SOurse VS BIzTalk:
Yes, i do agree the fact of high amount of License cost but it depends on your requirement whether you want to pay microsoft for BizTalk. Obiviously before choosing open sourse tool, you will need to think about future support as well.-

looks like a nice project, but I wouldn’t want to invest in putting my enterprise on it,and have one of those three guys get bored and stop supporting the project.

Hi,
Normally its purely depends on your business requirement. As per your Businessrequirement, if the business process changes once in a month or quater or so on and you dont have much time for the modification then you should go with Biztalk.
And for the licencing part, it depends on project costing, reliablity and support. Now your choice to go with Microsft biztalk or open source depending your budget
Some of the open source integration tools are in below.
- Jitterbit
- CloverETL
- OpenSyncro
And so on…….
Thanks……..
