I work for a company that is evaluating Biztalk Server, and had a few questions the 2010 version:
Will it work with either SQL Server 2005 Standard edition? This is what we run, and would like to not have to upgrade to 2008 unless absolutely required…
somewhat related to first question: if 2008 required, would Sql Server 2008 Express edition work? I see some postings about it not being recommended, but not sure why that is…
Is there a firm release date yet? I saw something about September release part in Sweden…
thanks for any and all help…

Hi,
From here: https://www.microsoft.com/biztalk/en/us/system-requirements.aspx#Software_Prereq
SQL Server 2005 SP2 or 2008 Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database server capable of efficiently processing high volumes of data. For optimal performance, we recommend that you use Enterprise Edition of SQL Server 2008. Note:In order to fully use the BizTalk Server 2009 SDK, or deploy BizTalk Server applications from a Visual Studio development environment, you must also install the SQL Server Development Tools. Note:Using SQL Server Express Edition in a production environment is not recommended. The Express edition does not include certain features needed by BizTalk Server.

Should probably talk more about what you don’t get with
BizTalk 2009. With 2009, you don’t get
support for Windows 08 R2 and SQL 08 R2.I’m not sure if you can run BizTalk 2010 on SQL Express. I was able to install it into SQL Express
myself but didn’t try running anything. Years
ago they have an basic version of BizTalk that could only run on free SQL.Hope this helps.
