I have running service instances that just won’t go away. I’ve tried terminating them every which way. I’ve unenlisted every associated artifact, restarted the host, rebooted my machine … nothing seems to work.

I have a FTP receive location that is using a PGP decrypt pipeline (this appears to be working okay). I have two send ports subscribing to the FTP receive port by filtering on the BTS.ReceivePortName. The files appear to make to their destination folders but I end up with these zombie instances whose Service Name is the name of the subscribing send ports. The send ports are using simple passthrutramsit pipelines.

Is there an easy way to get rid of running service instances that are days old and appear to be zombies?  And what may be causing them?

Is the SQL Agent running on the BizTalk database server. There are a number of jobs that cleanup references etc. If these jobs are not running or are failing then you are unable to terminate some instances.

If the SQL Agent is running and all jobs are successfully completing then you may need to get the MessageBoxViewer out of its holster. http://blogs.technet.com/jpierauc/pages/msgboxviewer.aspx
