Hi Folks,
I’m new to BizTalk, so apologies if this is an obvious question. . .
I have recently installed BizTalk Server 2009 and Visual Studio Team System 2008 SP1 on my Windows XP machine. I’m hoping to familiarise myself with BizTalk, and have found a number of useful tutorials on the web. However, they all discuss the use of the Orchestration Design Surface, but don’t tell you how to access this. As there is no program called this on the start menu, under the BizTalk folder, I assume this is accessed via creating a project within Visual Studio. However, in Visual Studio I can’t see any new project templates called “BizTalk” or “Orchestration”. I’ve tried running a repair on BizTalk, and editing the registry (“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Projects\{FAE04EC0-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}\PossibleProjectExtensions” to be “csproj;btproj”) as I’d seen a post saying this may be the issue, but had no luck.
So my question is: how do you get to the Orchestration Design Surface, if it’s through Visual Studio, what project template should I be selecting, and if the new project template doesn’t exist, how do I create it?

Hi JB,
Did you install Biztalk before installing Visual Studio on your machine? If so, you will not see the Biztalk project templates when opening VS, so uninstall BizTalk and re-install it. When you open Visual Studio, and go to File -> New Project, you will see an entry for BizTalk Projects, which allows you to create a BizTalk project; when you add an Orchestration object to your project, you will see the Orchestration Design Surface displayed in the center.
