Backing Up BAM

I am going through the Backup process listed on the msdn (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa560972(BTS.10).aspx) site and I am wondering how to back up the BAMAnalysis, BAMStarSchema and BAMArchive database.

The documentation says “to backup these databases, you must use SQL Server Analysis Manager.”  What is the SQL Server Analysis Manger?  Is this a seperate install on the SQL Server or on the Biztalk Server?

Is this something that a BizTalk Admin can use, or should it be limited to the DBA?

      Thanks,

      Jason

      Jason,

The SQL Services Analysis Manager is SQL Server Management Studio with Analysis Services installed. Unfortunately, the name is a “hodgepodge” of “SQL Enterprise Manager” and “Analysis Services.” Provided you have installed the client tools and Analysis Services 2008, you should be able to connect to the SQL Server that hosts the databases and perform a backup.

A BizTalk Admin can perform this task, or it can be performed by a DBA. It’s imperative that as part of your BizTalk backup/restore and solution support strategy, you have worked with your DBA (if one so exists) to determine backup schedules for BizTalk and BAM databases, and taken into account factors such as backup strategy, frequency, failover, physical location of media, SAN/NAS, etc.

I would recommend you attempt a backup in a test environment first to gain comfort with the process. Then, approach your DBA about how the BAM backup fits into the overall enterprise strategy for backups. There may be additional concerns, such as needs for archiving, HIPAA, Sarbox, or other legal constraints that require the databases to be backed up in a specific way.

      Hope that helps,

Thanks Jeff.  I will check with the DBA to ensure that the Analysis Services is intalled on the SQL Server.

Just to confirm the steps for BAM backuk

        1. Run “Backup BizTalk Server” Job for BAMPrimaryImport

        2. Execute all BAM_DM_<activity name> packages

        3. Use Analysis Services to back up BAMAnalysis

        4. Use Enterprise Manger to backup BAMStarSchems and BAMArchive.

        Thanks,

        Jason

          Jason,

That’s pretty much the process. Shoot me an e-mail if you run into any further problems.
