In a Virtual PC 2007 environment.

Installed Windows Server 2008 in a clean virtual HD and am now trying to install Visual Studio 2008. Now into hour 3. The installation goes fine to a point … (Runtime Pre-requisites; .Net Framework 3.5; Document Explorer; and Web Authoring Component) and fairly quickly. Then it starts to install Visual Studio 2008 and nothing happens… it just sits there with the message “Installing Microsoft visual Studio 2008”, for hours now. The pictures keep changing but there is nothing on the progress bar beneath that message.

Is anyone aware of why this is occuring? The dialog is not frozen; task mgr (on VPC) shows CPU usage is active but usually under 50% and memory at 500 MB (out of possible 2GB). Is this installation going to be an overnight process?

It sounds like VS2008 has hung – I’ve just installed it this morning on (VirtualBox VM) and it took about five minutes end to end.

I would suggest quitting the installer, restarting your VM and re-installing.

      Rgds, Nick.

This was my second attempt at installing VS2008.  Both times I used a clean WinSrv2008 O/S but had the same result.  VS2008 hangs (did so overnight – 16 hours worth).

The application event log has several errors, like:

Application Error w/ Event ID: 1000; Keyword: 0x80000000000000

Faulting application msiexec.exe, version 4.5.6002.16670, time stamp 0x4983d418, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.16670, time stamp

0x4983e781, exception code 0x80000003, fault offset 0x000348d8, process id 0xf5c, application start time 0x01c9bc8c731d0340.

I’m not sure what the problem is, but am leaning towards this being a problem with my WinSrv2008 install.
