      Our organization is in the beginning stage of a project that we “think” is going to leverage a tool like Biztalk to implement a new (not yet developed) platform to connect various business components. Third-party, in house, etc;

      As I explore Biztalk 2006 R2 it appears to be in line with what we are thinking. Windows Communication Foundation integration is one main ingredient.

      Now, with Biztalk 2009 “looming” I don’t know whether to devote my energies into understanding 2006 R2 or Biztalk 2009

      Is anyone else “out there” in a similar boat? And if so, have you figured out which way you are going to go?

      BizTalk R3 (or 2009) will not be a big change from R2.  The R3 release is mostly just to add compatibility for SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008, & Visual Studio 2008.  If you understand R2, you will understand R3.  Also, any code you write for R2 should be easily portable to R3.  I would recommend to go with R3 whenever it is released because the lack of VS 2008 compatibility in R2 is extremely annoying!

        Don’t forget: 2009 is certified in the current round of Drummond Group AS2 (in which 2006 R2 is not.)

      Charles Young has a good overview of Biztalk 2009 over at http://blog.solidsoft.com/blogs/charles_young_mvp_biztalk/default.aspx
